
Julie London (nee Peck, September 26, 1926 - October 18, 2000) is an American actress and singer who spanned more than 40 years. London was a torch singer who was known for her soft, smooth voice. She recorded more than 30 albums of pop and jazz classics from 1955 to 1969. Inducted into The Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001 was her recording of "Cry me a river" which she introduced to her debut album. London was nominated for the Golden Globe Award as a actor for her performance in Emergency! of Dixie McCall. London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her acting career began as an actress , while she was employed as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's 35-year-long acting career began around 1944, when she appeared in films. They included roles as the lead female role in several westerns. She also appeared with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) as well as Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). She signed a recording agreement with Liberty Records in the mid-1950s. It was the beginning of her professional music career. In 1969 she released her last studio album. However, she continued to be prominent in the emergency show in the role of Dixie McCall, a female nurse. (1972-1979) in which she was a co-star with Bobby Troup. Jack Webb produced the show.
